Nato and Warsaw Pact
NATO (or North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was formed in 1949 when twelve countries wanted to stop the spread of Communism. The Warsaw Pact was between eight countries in 1955, and the countries that signed the pact agreed to protect each other if outside forces attack. They also formed a unified military command. These rival pacts created an even larger rift between the opposing forces.
